Market Analysis
The market size of musculoskeletal diseases is projected to reach $7.9 billion by 2027, with a forecasted Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 6.9% between 2022 and 2027. Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) encompass injuries or ailments affecting muscles, nerves, tendons, joints, cartilage, and spinal discs. Defined by the Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, MSDs include conditions resulting from repetitive motion, overexertion, or bodily reactions such as bending, climbing, crawling, reaching, or twisting. MSDs do not cover disorders caused by falls, trips, slips, or similar events. The most prevalent musculoskeletal diseases reported by bone and joint disease organizations are arthritis, back pain, and trauma. Annually, patients seek treatment for these conditions in hospitals, emergency care, and physician practices. Treating major musculoskeletal diseases incurs higher costs compared to many other medical conditions due to their tendency to cause long-term pain and disability.
According to a recent analysis of Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 data, approximately 1.71 billion individuals worldwide suffer from musculoskeletal disorders, including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, low back pain, neck discomfort, fractures, and other injuries. The global prevalence of musculoskeletal diseases, coupled with their increasing incidence, particularly among aging populations, drives new research and development initiatives in this field. Leading groups such as Zimmer Biomet Holdings, Inc., Stryker Corporation, Medtronic, Wright Medical Group, and others contribute significantly to the growth of the musculoskeletal disease industry during the forecast period from 2022 to 2027.
