Venice is a city in Italy. Venezia is a city in northern Italy that serves as the capital of both the provincia (province) of Venezia and the region³ of Veneto. It was formerly the capital of a marine republic and is now an island city. It was late mediaeval Europe's most important seaport and the continent's commercial and cultural gateway to Asia. Venice is unique in terms of its atmosphere, architecture, and history, and the city was once known as la serenissima ("the most tranquil" or "sublime"). It is one of the world's oldest tourist and cultural centres, as well as a prominent Italian port on the northern Adriatic Sea.
